devotions: of the earth

To be of the Earth is to know

the restlessness of being a seed
the darkness of being planted
the struggle toward the light
the pain of growth into the light
the joy of bursting and bearing fruit
the love of being food for someone
the scattering of your seeds
the decay of the seasons
the mystery of death
and the miracle of birth.

chicken tortilla soup: warms the soul

Recently my good friend, Susan, of Beaded Art Jewelry , and I met for a metal art play date at her studio in Black Forest. Susan served this delicious soup, but couldn't give me a recipe as it wasn't written down. After describing what was in it, and me taking metal notes, here's a pretty close copycat. Absolutely perfect for a cold winter day.

2 chicken breasts, boneless, skinless, cubed

In a soup pot brown the chicken in olive oil. Take the meat out and set aside for a few minutes. In the same pot on medium heat, add all the veggies and garlic below. Sautee a few minutes, stirring a few times.

2 stalks of celery, chopped
2 nice size carrots, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1 small can of diced green chilies-your heat preference
(I used mild, but may try medium next time)
4 or so cloves of garlic, chopped

Once the veggies are sauteed, add the chicken back in with the following:

3 cans of chicken broth (I used low sodium) or 6 cups of your own chicken stock
1 can of pinto or black beans, drained and rinsed
1/4 t. red pepper
1/4 t. black pepper
1/2 t. oregano
1/2 t. basil
1 t. cumin (more if you really like it)
2 bay leaves
salt as you wish or wait

Simmer for 2 hours, covered. Stir every so often. When ready to serve add shredded jack/cheddar cheese and broken up corn tortilla chips. Eat right away! Freezes well.

in her words: the golden rule with victoria o'neill

Victoria O'Neill, of Artypantz, is an amazing mixed media artist who has created an interfaith color book, titled The Golden Rule, for all ages. This inspiring book features The Golden Rule excerpts from Traditional African Religion, Christianity, Buddhism, Baha’i Faith, Islam, Judaism, Hindu, Confucianism, and Native American Wisdom, along with beautiful images of butterflies, flowers, and birds.

In Her Words:
"Peace is accepting diversity and other perspectives, and the process of facing and attempting to resolve conflict. Peace can also mean rising above conflict by stepping aside or away from it when necessary.

Following The Golden Rule is a personal step towards peace. It is such a universal basic spiritual solution to many of the problems we face. One day I was just struck with the idea of creating a coloring book about it......for every age.   It seemed that by coloring it one would be engaged in reading the various sacred texts, and perhaps spark conversation and action."

It's a cute size and folds out to about two feet and can be displayed on a shelf. Getting together with a group and coloring these books is very uplifting! Works best with colored pencils.

I ordered one for each of my grandchildren, so we can color together. I can't wait to see them! They are available in Victoria's etsy shop, individually packaged, or contact for bulk orders.

special devotions: holocaust remembrance day

Monumental Perspective by White Void Design
 For Humanity

Thou has created all humanity from the same stock. Thou hast decreed that all shall belong to the same household.

In Thy Holy Presence they are all Thy servants, and all mankind are sheltered beneath Thy Tabernacle; all have gathered together at Thy Table of Bounty; all are illumined through the light of Thy Providence.

~ Baha'i Writings

Today, January 27th, is holocaust remembrance day established by the UN General Assembly in 2005.

in my studio: mistakes with a happy ending

Last weekend in the studio was a lot of fun because I made a few mistakes and had to figure out how to salvage a couple pieces of metal. I couldn't just throw them away, so had to use some of that creative energy I talked about in yesterday's post! Below is the outcome of those mistakes. A mistake could mean a stamped word spelled wrong or a hole punched in the wrong place. Yep, that's what I did but you'd never know :-)

Hand stamped and hammered necklace. The last line, not showing because I cut it off, was misspelled but it still worked out.

I hammered and stamped the copper and etched the brass disc for different projects. Didn't plan to put disc on the copper, but that's where I punched the hole off enough to make a difference in how the pendant would hang. I couldn't use a jump ring to attach the chain from, so I threaded the chain through the hole and the bead acts as a stopper when the necklace hangs around the neck.

I etched this brass disc with a heart pattern but didn't like how it turned out, so I stamped the words in and beat it up a bit, then riveted the disc to the copper square.

These earrings turned out fine. Just threw them in for eye candy :-)

art picks: treasury for a cause - haitian metal of haiti

This Etsy treasury is sponsored by the ART WALK ON ETSY TEAM for the purpose of raising funds for our fellow Etsy shop Haitian Metal.  They are still in the recovery process after last years devastating earthquake.  Fourteen Etsy shop owners have donated art work in this treasury. At least 50% of the purchase price from each item sold from this collection will be donated, by the selling artist, directly to aid in their rebuilding efforts.  Please see more information below about this wonderful group of Haitian metal artists.

in her words: the love shop

The first thing I notice when visiting The Love Shop is the subtitle "Get Happy & Be Inspired". This is the place to do that! And since St. Valentine's Day is just around the corner, I thought it would be great to feature love words by JJ, creator of these wonderful prints.
